Reader’s Theatre

Last week, our second graders officially started their Reader’s Theatre journey! Simply put: a Reader’s Theatre is a more theatrical way of telling a story. The main differences between a theatre production and a Reader’s Theatre: no sets, no costumes, and no memorizing lines. The main areas of focus for a Reader’s Theatre are reading with controlled fluency, expression, and maintaining a confident volume level.

We started by reading the script together as a class, without specific parts. After discussing the story and it’s origin, students then chose parts. To aid this process, Mrs. Keller ordered the characters from the most reading parts to the least, so students could make a more informed decision when choosing “good fit” characters.

Today, students finally had the chance to read through the script all together as their individual character, focusing on identifying new or unfamiliar words. After wards, they partnered up to practice reading their lines with appropriate expression at a low volume.
