Wishtoyo

Today was a special day for Lower School. As a campus community, we came together to recognize and celebrate all the hard work and effort that has been put in to renovating what was previously known as “The Secret Garden”. Students were able to explore various activities such as Bear Tag, watercolor poppies, poppy seed planting, music, and a read aloud.

After this exploration, our 4th graders walked us through the process of recreating the beautiful, peaceful, quiet space. We are so grateful for all of the hard work and thoughtful effort that was put into this project by students, parents, and staff!

Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead – is a holiday celebrated on Nov. 1-2 throughout Latin America, but most strongly recognized and celebrated in Mexico. Our students have spent time in Art, Spanish, and Homeroom learning how Dia de los Muertos is meant to honor those who have passed away with lively festivals and celebrations. One of the most familiar symbols surrounding Dia de los Muertos is the skeleton or skull, so we read stories and did a few projects in art class and homeroom associated with this tradition:

One cultural tradition surrounding Dia de los Muertos is to place items on an altar, such as favorite foods, pictures, candles, toys, jewelry, and flowers as a way to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. To demonstrate this, Tony Aceves joined our class and shared how his family celebrated Dia de los Muertos this year. Mr. Aceves also shared a great video to help the students better understand the various customs and traditions that his family and other Latin American and Mexican families practice.

And of course, what would a cultural celebration be without a little food sample?! We got to taste some conchas, which are a yummy Mexican pastry.
